BOURBONNAIS, IL – It’s here! It’s here! Summer that is, and that means that we will be in and out of our vehicles going from one place to the next on vacations, baseball games, picnics, going to the beach and everything in between. We here at Court Street For want to make sure that you and the family get to your destination safe and have put together a few Summer Safety travel tips. You can also view these on our Pinterest board here.

  1. Get a good night’s sleep before hitting the road leaving for a long family road trip.
  2. Tell your kids what to expect before you leave on a long trip.
  3. Add some buffer time: Holidays should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace so get into holiday mode before you hit the road.
  4. Plan one extended stop along the way to your destination,
  5. Stop for breaks even if you are not tires and switch drivers frequently.
  6. Eat healthy and often! It may be tempting to make a quick stop for fast food, a heavy burger and greasy fries will quickly make you feel tires. Healthy snacks every few hours will give you more energy and help keep you alert longer.
  7. Drive slowly at night than you usually do and increase your following distances. You should be able to stop withing the paremeters of the area your headlights reach – don’t overdrive your headlights!
  8. When following another vehicle, use your low beams so you don’t blind or distract the driver ahead of you. In an oncoming car keeps their high beams on, watch the right edge of the road and use that as a steering guide to avoid glare.
  9. Keep headlights, tail lights, signal lights, and windows clean and in working order.
  10. Don’t rely on caffeine to keep you up.
  11. Listen to your body.
  12. Let your spouse handle the children.
  13. Be cautious in bad weather.
  14. Don’t follow too closely.
  15. Watch out for the other guy.
  16. Practice defensive driving.
  17. Keep distractions to a minimum — such as using a cell phone, texting, eating, or reading.
