BOURBONNAIS, IL – If you have been looking to purchase a vehicle recently you may have come across the term “MyKey®” as an option. Ford MyKey® technology is now standard on over 6 million new Ford and Lincoln vehicles. But what exactly is it? This technology is a safety option which allows parents to monitor their teens driving to ensure responsible driving habits. It can also be used by fleet managers to help promote safe driving habits of their employees and customers.
All you have to do is program the key to a restricted driving mode setting to help increase seat belt use, limit top speed and to decrease audio volume to promote good habits. After a key has been programmed, when inserted into the ignition, the system reads its transponder chip and indentifies the MyKey® code, activating the settings that you have selected.
Driving modes available include: Belt-Minder, Top Speed Settings, Screened radio content, and earlier low-fuel warning.
- Belt-Minder®: This feature effectively provides a six-second reminder chime every 30 seconds and mutes the audio system until the vehicle’s front occupants fasten their safety belts. The message center also displays “Buckle Up to Unmute Radio.”
- Top Speed Settings: MyKey allows you to limit a vehicle’s top speed at four different settings – 65, 70, 75 or 80 mph, with chimes sounding at 45, 55 and 65 mph.
- Screened radio content: MyKey lets you block all stations labeled as “explicit” by Sirius Satellite Radio.
- Earlier low-fuel warning: MyKey provides a warning at 75 miles to empty, rather than the standard warning at 50 miles to empty.
Other option include deactivating Park Aid and BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), limiting audio volume to 44 percent of total volume and deactivating the optional AdvanceTrac® setting which limits tire spin.
MyKey was inspired by the determination of Andy Sarkisian, Ford safety planning and strategy manager, to keep his two daughters, along with teens everywhere, safe behind the wheel.
“We were brainstorming at work, thinking, ‘Is there anything we can do to our vehicles – anything we could add – to keep our kids safer?’” recalls Sarkisian, who has been with Ford for 35 years. “At the time, I was living out the scenario at home.”
The most recent vehicle to acquire the Ford MyKey technology is the 2014 Ford Fiesta which became available over the summer.
“It’s not about control – it’s not anything that dramatic,” Sarkisian says. “MyKey is about love. It’s about helping your children manage the transition from childhood to adulthood, and keeping them safer while they do it.”
To program a key all you have to do is visit your vehicles message center to choose your preferred MyKey® driving modes. For specific instructions please refer to your Owner’s Manual.
