Easy Fuel – Capless Fuel System

BOURBONNAIS, IL – Ford Motor Company introduced the Easy Fuel Capless Fuel system in 2008 and is available on most new Ford vehicles today. The fuel system is easy to use and has many advantages. If you are not familiar with the capless fuel system you may have a few questions. Here we will go over a few of those questions as well as what to do if you run out of gas.

With the numbers of fuel thefts reported rising how will this help prevent me from becoming a victim of fuel theft?

The Ford Easy Fuel feature is designed to easily let fuel in and make it difficult to get fuel out. Ford’s capless full filler deters gas theft two different ways. With Easy Fuel, a spring-loaded flapper door is held closed by latches that can only be released by a standard-size fuel nozzle. This eliminates the need for a fuel tank screw cap. When the proper nozzle is inserted into the filler neck of the system, the latches release, and the nozzle pushes the spring-loaded flapper door to the open position. When the nozzle is removed, the flapper door automatically is forced closed by the spring.

What should I do if I run out of gas and need to use a gas can?

If you should find yourself in a situation where you have run out of gas and are nowhere near a gas station there is a funnel provided for you in your vehicle. Please review over your owner’s manual for the exact location.

Is there anything else that I should know?

Before attempting to re-fuel your vehicle you should inspect the nozzle tip. If the nozzle sleeve is missing, the fuel station nozzle may not be able to activate the Easy Fuel capless flapper door. If the nozzle sleeve is loose or gapped out of place, the nozzle may become trapped inside the capless device after insertion. You can review this graphic which goes over the fuel station nozzles that are ok and not ok, as well as this youtube video.
