Last week was a very exciting one for Ford fans and customers. Several new models were announced for the upcoming model years including the new Raptor, Shelby GT350R, and the highly anticipated FordGT. There is no doubt that Ford has big plans for the future.
Along with these new model announcements, Ford also announced a new 3.5L Ecoboost® engine (christened the eco”beast”) for the new FordGT, and immediately critics cried foul. Some even went so far as to accuse Ford of phasing out their V8 Engines completely.
These rumors could not be farther from the truth. Ford’s Global Technology Powertrain Communication Manager Paul Seredynski addressed these rumors and concerns bluntly: “(There is) no basis of truth in these reports”. The fact is Ford has no plans to stop production on V8 engines. Ford realizes the demand for V8’s and is not going to disappoint their customers. Seredynski simply pointed out the new v8 engines that were just launched in the 2015 Mustang, and the upcoming 5.2L V8 in the GT350 and GT350R were proof enough that the V8’s are here to stay.
So why did Ford choose Ecoboost® engines for their new GT and Raptor? Seredynski stated the engines would provide “more power and torque with increased efficiency” compared to the current V8 in the Raptor. The new 3.5L v6 Ecoboost® was key to the design of the GT which allowed “…the exceptionally narrow rear canopy; a key aerodynamic element” says Seredynski. The new engines will also provide better gas mileage and cleaner emissions.
Despite the demand and benefits of Ecoboost® engines, Ford still realizes the demand for v8’s and is not going to disappoint their customers. The only question is, will we be seeing a V8 Ecoboost® in the near future?
“We do not discuss future product” said Seredynski.
We still remain optimistic, and eagerly await future announcements.
