The Chicago Auto Show ended this weekend after a week-long exposition of vehicles from every manufacturer imaginable. With all the flashy performance cars in the spotlight, it is important to remember that there are also many cars that are specifically built to fulfill special purposes and job roles on display. One such car is the 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor. The Interceptor is a hometown favorite, being manufactured at Ford’s Assembly Plant in Chicago. The Interceptor was introduced the first week of the Auto Show with the help of Keegan the police dog.
The interceptor was designed in part by Ford’s engineering team as well as direct input from Ford’s Police Advisory Board to address all the challenges police officers face in their daily duties. Basic cosmetic and practical upgrades include new headlamps, upgraded instrument panel, and an upgraded electrical system to power the various computer systems officers run in their vehicles. One of the stand out features by-far on the new Interceptor is the “surveillance mode”. While the car is in this mode, the Interceptor scans around the vehicle and if anyone approaches from the sides or rear, the vehicle automatically locks its doors and rolls up the windows. This is a key feature that will go a long way to protecting officers in their vehicles.
Along with these impressive upgrades there is also a standard rearview camera, all wheel drive, and a 3.7L V6 engine (with an available 3.5L V6 Eco-Boost). The Interceptor also wields a 6 speed transmission with “pursuit mode” to assist officers at higher speeds and in situations that require aggressive driving. To better serve the multitude of needs that must be filled to accommodate law enforcement, there are over 125 different equipment packages available to outfit the Interceptor with packages for anything from K-9 units to patrol and SWAT vehicles.
With all of these available and standard features, its not hard to see why the Ford Interceptor now accounts for 56% of the police vehicle market. Ford does not hold anything back when it comes to outfitting and producing police vehicles to serve our community.
