When it comes to today’s pickup trucks, the 2015 F-150 is the leader in technology. With the F-150’s available rear camera, 360 degree camera, and dynamic hitch assist, the F-150 is leading the way in making pickup trucks safer and more convenient to use. In the spirit of these great innovations Ford has just announced another first for not only Ford, but pickup trucks in general; the Pro-trailer back up assist.
The Pro-Trailer back up assist, is a new technology introduced by Ford which will make backing up with a trailer or boat hitched easier than ever. The technology works by allowing the driver to turn a know which indicates the direction they want the trailer to go, and the steering wheel will automatically be turned to the correct direction. Backing up with a trailer attached is no simple task. The front wheels must be turned the opposite direction from the direction you want to go. Turn the wheel too fast, and the trailer can jack-knife, or even worse swing back and damage the vehicle. This makes backing up, even with a spotter, a stressful situation.
Rather than accept this age old ordeal as something a truck owner must suffer through, Ford created the Pro-Trailer back up assist to finally offer a solution. Not only will this allow new or first time truck owners to better learn how to back up their truck, but to also offer assistance to veteran drivers, but making the entire process simpler and more practical. This will make backing a trailer into your driveway or backing your boat down a launch a faster and less stressful, giving you more time to do the things you enjoy. “Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a smart solution to save time and increase productivity for our customers.” said Doug Scott, marketing manager for the Ford Truck Group. “Instead of struggling to back up their trailer, they can spend more time on the job or enjoying the lake.”
Ford spent over 10 years testing and perfecting this technology, and they are finally ready to release it to the world. Ford earned 5 patents developing the technology, and has 10 more awaiting approval.
Pro Trailer Backup Assist for the 2016 F-150 is the latest in a long line of segment-first and class-exclusive Ford truck innovations and capabilities that make trailer towing easier. Some of Ford’s other innovations include:
- First integrated trailer brake controller, 2005: The first integrated, factory-installed trailer brake controller for the 2005 F-Series Super Duty, the Ford system ties into the truck’s brakes to activate the trailer brakes by sensing truck brake pressure
- First trailer sway control, 2009: The first trailer sway control for the 2009 Ford F-150, the Ford system senses differences in movement between truck and trailer, using the wheel brakes in both vehicles to counteract sway
- First smart trailer control module, 2015: First system to the truck’s productivity screen to show the driver which lights on a trailer connected to the truck aren’t working – meaning the driver or a passenger doesn’t have to get out of the truck and walk around the trailer to find lights have blown out
- First and Class-exclusive dynamic hitch assist, 2015: A rearview camera feature that incorporates a dynamic line based on steering wheel angle in the display helps customers line up their truck and trailer with no spotter or need to exit the vehicle
The Pro Trailer Backup Assist will be available on the all new 2016 Ford F-150 alongside all of the other driver assist technology already available on the F-150.
